Charles Graeber, 37, hat Medizin studiert und in „Kidney International�? veröffentlicht. Später wurde er freier Reporter, seine Texte sind erschienen in Wired, National Geographic Adventure und The New Yorker. Auf Alex, den Rennfahrer, stieß er zufällig durch einen Freund - und da Graeber gern Geschichten schreibt über „adventurous individual characters with something obscure to prove�? nahm er sofort Kontakt zu ihm auf. Bei der Recherche war er möglichst dicht dran: Ein Stück des Weges saß er bei Alex und Maher im Auto, ein zweites Mal flog er mit im „spotter plane�?, das die Radarfallen auscheckte. Viele der Dialoge entnahm er der Kameraaufzeichnung im Cockpit.
Graeber: „I did that because I wanted to be there, of course, and because I wanted to 'get it'- to understand what this was all about, what it felt like, what was involved. I needed to believe it to write it. Alex asked me to be his copilot. I said yes, of course- not because I wanted to, but because I saw it as an opportunity on many levels. Wired Magazine refused to allow me to be a driver, however. I thought that I should simply not tell them, and surprise them with a better story at the end- which they suspected. They threatened to fire me if I followed that course of action.�?
